Thirty-One

Outside

Thomas squinted his eyes, adjusting to the fierce glare of the sun. Then his jaw dropped and he simply gawked at the view.

To one side, stretching behind the dilapidated fortress was an endless ocean. It was deep blue with myriad white caps as the howling wind knocked it about. Small gulls wheeled on thermals throughout the sky, sometimes swooping down to dive for prey.

The rhythmic shushing noise he had heard in the fortress was no longer a mystery. It was the sound of the waves, crashing their surf against the rocky cliffs. Occasionally a large wave would smash particularly hard, causing a resounding boom to echo through the air.

He was most amazed by the distance between everything. The sheer scale of the ocean disappearing into the horizon was a truly alien sight. He never imagined it would be so vast. The sky itself wasn’t anything like a blue painting suspended in the air. That’s how it had been described to him. No, it was endless. On and on and on, until the clouds in the very far distance dissolved into mist.

There wasn’t anything remotely like this in the dungeon. It was totally overwhelming. He was used to seeing cavern walls around him at all times. This was the first open space he had ever seen in his entire life. The very concept of openness was antithetical to the tightly-enclosed dungeon. He now understood why so many of their dungeon party had complained of the suffocating closeness over the years.

He slowly turned, enjoying all the incredible new things his eyes were registering. A faded blue mountain range, fronted by yet another sea but this one was with green plants … trees! They were beautiful. He couldn’t wait to see them up close.

The fortress itself was buried in what looked like a towering wave of solid obsidian. The wave was frozen solid in mid-air, halfway through the motion of crashing over the dull square building. It was no wonder all the doors and windows were blocked up. It was as if someone of incredible power had liquified a mountain, only to flash-freeze it solid again, right as it descended on the fortress. The crest of the wave rose several hundred feet high in some places, giving it an ominous feeling of impending doom, like it was about to descend in cold fury and destroy all life below.

Looking down, it was also clear that he wasn’t standing on the lip of a tunnel at all, but at the end of a large winding pipe that had erupted into the sky. Dozens of other pipes were nearby, each one fountaining wild mana into the open air.

They stood all in a row, like silent sentinels guarding the fortress. In front of the vents lay an open plateau of rock. It spanned several leagues across, before yielding to the bright green forest that took purchase in the rich loamy soil at its edge.

Thomas leaped from the edge of the vent and slid down the steep gravel incline.
